Runner’s Knee or PFPS

runner's knee illustration

If you are a frequent runner and you suffer with knee pain, it could be a condition called Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) or Runner’s knee. This is a discomfort felt in the knees that is often the result of excessive force being placed on the knees (e.g, high mileage runners) or as a result of an imbalance of the supporting muscles. There is some evidence to suggest that tight or excessively built up quadriceps could cause an abnormal contact between the back of the kneecap and the femur, which could then lead to the discomfort felt in Runner’s Knee.

There is little knowledge of the best way to treat Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome but as it is a condition that often occurs through over-excising, the most sensible thing to do would be to rest until the discomfort reduces. If you are a super keen runner and the thought of stopping your runs terrifies you, try running on ‘kinder’ surfaces such as grass or a running track. Furthermore, investing in a pair of shock absorbing running shoes could help reduce the stress on your knees.

How our insoles could help.

Although rest is the recommended treatment for runner’s knee, purchasing a pair of Dr.Insole’s sport insoles would help to reduce the stress felt on the knees as the shock absorbing materials that we use will help soak up the harsh force that each running bound generates. Each pair is handmade and would be designed to fit perfectly inside your chosen pair of running or sport shoes to ensure they will not wobble around inside the shoes. So if you are in the rehabilitation stages of runner’s knee, get in touch with one of our team today and they will explain the procedure we will go through to hopefully make the discomfort disappear.
